A somewhat rambling post

I have many things I should be doing, and my brain is too tired to focus on any of them. Bleh.

Saw The Wrestler over the weekend. By way of review, I’ll say that I thought it was a good movie, and I thought Mickey Rourke did a good job, but I don’t think I liked the movie. (not having seen Milk, I have no idea whether or not Mickey Rourke should have won the Oscar…)

I hated the ending. Also, I went in expecting a story of redemption, and I wouldn’t say that was what I got. Ah well.

(I have a much longer related rumination in mind, but I don’t have the mental energy at the moment…maybe one day.)

On a sort of related note…I’m quite certain that I’m going to see Watchmen, because it kind of comes with the territory, but I’m not so sure I’m going to like it. I started reading it once, a long time ago, but I never finished. I just don’t think it’s the kind of story I’ll enjoy. Feel free to try and convince me otherwise.

My ongoing cell phone saga continues…I hemmed and hawed long enough about dropping Verizon and going to AT&T that Verizon called me, and I ended up renewing my plan. I still want to get a new phone, and I don’t know what to get. In order to get a Blackberry, I have to up my plan by $30/month. (and if I decide to do that, do I get a Curve for free, or go to the shiny-looking new Storm for $ that I could–but probably shouldn’t–spend?) I am terrible at making decisions!

How is it only Wednesday? It should be at least Thursday.

And speaking (sort of) of the weekend, I can’t believe we’re turning the clocks ahead already.

And that’s all I’ve got, folks. Later.

A few more awesome things

  • Flowers for no reason
  • Crate & Barrel customer service
  • Eden 😉
  • Friday

Happy weekend everyone!

Things I’m bored with/that are awesome

Things I’m bored with:

  • The crowd booing Simon every time he speaks on American Idol
  • Ryan Seacrest
  • Almost all of the posts on TV Squad and EW Popwatch lately
  • Almost all of the people who comment on said posts
  • Trying to make sophomores appreciate understand Julius Caesar

Things that are awesome:

  • That you can order Dr Pepper made with cane sugar (instead of HFCS) online
  • People who write hilarious reviews/recaps of Twilight
  • Pre-ordering Seanan’s book at Amazon
  • Life on Mars and Lost
  • Brian Dunkelman on My Name is Earl
  • Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert, no matter what the internet says
  • Having internet friends who will stop at Staples for you and mail you purple pens
  • The massage I got last night (if anyone needs a recommendation for a massage therapist in the area, let me know!)

Today, I am…

procrastinating
having my teeth cleaned
thinking about artistic endeavors
contemplating my all-time favorite books for a facebook meme
getting new wiper blades put on my car
wishing for a few more days of vacation
in pain (I have a baseball-sized knot in my left shoulder)
playing around with my blog
celebrating a good friend’s success
wondering how it got to be 4 p.m. already
drinking hot chocolate

that’s all…what are you up to today?

Random Tuesday things

  • My doctor is awesome. She gave me three samples of Nasonex and told me to call the office when I run out because she gets them all the time.
  • Somewhat related–while at the doctor’s office, I had to update some paperwork (name, address, etc.). I learned that there was a very old form in there that listed X as one of the people they were allowed to discuss my personal medical stuff with. Eep!
  • I had a good day at school today.
  • I got to talk to Rand again…and he’ll be home tomorrow!
  • I lost two pounds this week, despite not eating well at all while my parents were visiting. I had breakfast at The Original Pancake House, even! (I did resist getting a Cinnamon Crunch bagel from Panera)
  • I’m playing online Scrabble and not getting my butt kicked.
  • I’m very happy with the kitchen. There are still some little things I want to do, but it is light years better than it was before. I’m so glad my parents were able to come up and help!

Okay, I’m tired…I think I’m going to read for a while and then go to bed. G’night!

S.A.D.

I’ve thought for a while now that I might have a touch of Seasonal Affective Disorder. I always tend to be a bit of a homebody at heart, but during the winter, I am a hardcore coccooner. I nearly go into hibernation mode. (I’m fairly certain I would hibernate, if my life would allow it…)

Of course, I get out to do the things I *have* to do, and I even occasionally do things that aren’t necessary, but I pretty much have to be dragged. It even gets hard for me to do the things I like doing, like my weekly yoga class.

In these dark, cold winter months, I seem to be more emotional, more easily agitated, more prone to…well…sadness, and I have a harder time snapping myself out of it. I’ve been feeling it pretty hard these past few days…probably compounded by the fact that I’m missing Rand.

Today, it was nice to see the sun for a bit. It would have been even better if I had not decided to enter a Wal-Mart. It was like the locusts had descended. Augh. Not pretty.

Anyway, if anyone has any advice to offer, I’d be happy to hear it!

Fun with my kitchen

While Rand is off gallivanting about the UK, my mom and dad came up to Buffalo to help do some work in our kitchen. Our main goal? To get rid of this:

ugly wallpaper

I hate wallpaper. I curse the man who invented wallpaper. And this? Barf. It looks it should have been in someone’s guest bathroom in 1986.

Here are a few other “before” pix of the kitchen:

light

This light was hanging above the kitchen table. Not really my style. I think the pink/blue flower motif was supposed to match the wallpaper. And I’m not entirely sure the bulb was supposed to be hanging down like that.

kitchen

This is not to demonstrate what a mess the countertop was, but to give somewhat of an idea of the rose counters, white cabinets, and ugly, ugly wallpaper combo. Oh, and you can see a wee bit of the blue valance above the kitchen window, too.

cabinets

Just a close-up of the cabinets.

sink

The last person who lived here was obsessed with white. I really want to replace this white sink…and while the faucet looks pretty, it is not at all practical. Because it’s so high up, every time you use the sink, water splashes *everywhere*.

While I was at work on Friday, my parents began stripping wallpaper. My dad made a trip to the hardware store, where he learned that there is special primer for painting over wallpaper. Score! No more stripping.

in progress

Walls have been primed, and we begin edging.

behind the fridge

Pulled out the fridge to paint behind it, and I was amused by the way the molding just stopped six inches short of the corner.

Same area, after paint. This, obviously, is the color I chose. It’s sort of a rosy chocolate color.

new paint

We’re finished now, and my parents have headed out. I’ll post some “after” pictures once I put a few finishing touches on, maybe later on today.
