Week in review, part 2

Okay, here’s where things get *really* crazy.

If you recall, at the beginning of this week, I had zero jobs. Oh, I’d taken steps to make sure I had work–getting my name on the sub lists of the schools where I’d been working and such. I also had an interview scheduled for a long-term sub job which would have started mid-September.

On Wednesday, Rand called me to let me know there was a sudden opening for an adjunct at his school…someone backed out at the last minute, leaving an intro English section without an instructor and the department head freaking out. We talked about it a bit, and I decided that it would be a good thing for me to do. Since classes start Monday, I had to jump right away to get paperwork in and such. (And also get to work on my syllabus, which is, um, not finished.)

So, one! One job! Ah-ah-ah.

Then, yesterday, I got a call from the principal at a school where I interviewed earlier this summer. It was a great interview, and while I was the #2 candidate, they did select someone else for the position. Well, that person took another job this week, and the department chair (who wanted to hire me in the first place) suggested that the principal call me to see if I was still available. And lo, I was indeed!

This position is another 1-year job, but rumor has it that this one has an excellent chance of becoming permanent. I’ll be teaching 9th and 12 grade English (Regents). I’ve taught much of the 9th grade material and some of the 12th grade material before.

Two! Two jobs! Ah-ah-ah.

This is my life. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to freaking out just a little bit about all of this, but I’m very excited too. I visited my classroom yesterday (I met with dept. chair to pick up some materials), and for the first time ever, I’ve got a completely blank slate. I can do whatever I want, and make it totally mine.

So, if anyone knows where I can get some free or cheap classroom decorations (posters and such) please let me know! 😉

Week in review, part 1

Wow, it’s been kinda crazy around here this week. I spent the early part of the week mostly recovering from the wild weekend of two weddings. Wedding #1 was in Syracuse–we drove out Friday night and hung out with my family. There was a Tully’s right across the street from the hotel, so we spent a lot of time there, eating and drinking way too much.

I wasn’t in a great position to get decent pictures at the ceremony or the reception, but my dad got some good ones. He’s been uploading them to facebook, so perhaps I will snag some of them there.

I did get to wear my awesome vintage dress:

(looking at these pics, I really need a haircut.)

We left the reception at around 10 to head home to Buffalo so that we could get some sleep before waking up early Sunday morning to drive to Cleveland for wedding #2!

We made it there in good time, and enjoyed our first Greek Orthodox wedding ceremony. The bride, as she had always promised, walked down the aisle to an arrangement of “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” played on the organ. Most of my pictures are up at flickr (except for some reception pics that I didn’t edit yet).

Stephanie looked fabulous in her RED wedding gown! I had a great time catching up with some people I hadn’t seen in quite a while. And even though we were exhausted, I stuck it out until the very end of the reception and the ceremonial playing of “American Pie” (it’s a sorority thing). I’m glad I did–even though that song seems so much longer than it used to!

Oh, and Stephanie’s reception had a photo booth. Way cool, and lots of fun. 🙂

Congratulations and best wishes Niki and Josh, and Stephanie and Brent!

Awesome spoof, or horrifying ignorance?

So, the internet has been all abuzz with speculation about this video on YouTube:

Is it for real? Or is it a well-done satire?

I’m in the satire camp. Evidence for satire:

1. Apparently, although they’ve been removed, the video originally included the tags Poe’s law and Henry Fielding.

2. I’m not sure the Indian girl’s accent is real. (It seems to slip in and out a bit…especially in the newer video “Going Green for God.”)

3. I don’t think these girls are as young as they’re pretending to be.

4. They’re trying not to crack up at the end.

5. Molly’s comments. Some examples:

“No, the reaction I got was nothing less than superb.”

LadyMurasaki2: >Poe’s Law

You’re the greatest. 10/10

Molly: [Thank You in Japanese]—thanks, Babelfish!

“You are so mean, calling my friend irregular, omg.”

What do you think?

Want this dress?

So, I bought this cute little black dress on overstock.com for supercheap, and of course, it doesn’t fit me…

dress

It’s a medium, but it seems to be a juniors-sized medium. It’s fairly short, even on me, and WAY too small at the top. I was kind of falling out of it, so it would probably be best for someone with, um, a little less going on up there. 😉 If you can use it, or know someone who could, I’d prefer to give it away rather than send it back. (Really, it was that cheap.) Comment or send an email.

Lately, I’ve been making an effort to use more environmentally-friendly personal and cleaning products. Pictured above:

Method toilet bowl cleaner, Method fresh shower spray, Dr. Bronner’s liquid castile soap (almond), Burt’s Bees facial cleansing cream, raspberry and brazil nut conditioner, milk and honey body lotion, peppermint lip balm, and Nature’s Gate chardonnay moisturizer.

I’ve used the castile soap to make facial cleanser, hand soap, and body wash, all of which I’ve been very happy with. I have a recipe around here somewhere for the facial cleanser (it has honey and vegetable glycerine in it), and the hand soap and body wash are just castile soap diluted with water with a smidge of vegetable glycerine and a wee bit of essential oil (I used ginger).

I just made the switch to “natural” dishwashing liquid and dishwasher detergent. I have not yet managed it with laundry detergent…so expensive…but I plan to when I start working again.

Rand and I have also been making more of an effort to buy organic and/or local foods whenever possible. Luckily for us, Wegmans makes this very easy. (I love the local farmer’s markets, but we don’t make it to one every week.)

I recently saw a delivery truck for Akron Poultry Farms, and I intend to call and get on their delivery route soon. I was checking out the website, and they have lots of great stuff!

Anybody want to recommend any great products?

Cover me

So I final got around to reading this post at Mental Floss, featuring some of the author’s favorite cover versions of various songs. I found that I was familiar with (and a fan of) most of them…but I thought I’d share some of my faves that didn’t make that list.

Here’s Travis doing Britney’s “Baby One More Time”

Here’s a Ben Folds cover of a Dr. Dre song…really, really NSFW, so click this link with care!

And finally, Jonathan Coulton does “Baby Got Back”:

I know there are others…but what are your favorites? 🙂

What I’ve been up to

Uploaded some photos to flickr–this isn’t everything I made during the last week, but it’s a decent sampling!

At the beginning of the week, I got an email from Jen about Artisan Day at the UB Farmer’s Market. They were looking for artists and crafters to set up…this Saturday, August 1.

After a brief moment of panic (this Saturday? holy crap!), I decided to do it…and so I’ve been busybusybusy all week. This is why I’ve not actually been in front of the computer all that much. I’ll post some photos later of what I’ve been working on.

So anyway, if you’re interested, I’ll be at the UB Farmer’s Market tomorrow from 9-1 (UB South Campus on the Main Street sidewalks across from Kenmore Avenue in Buffalo). Please stop by and say hi!

Like sands through the hourglass

So this weekend, Rand and I went to PA for my cousin’s graduation party. I made him a gift, in addition to a bit of cash, of course. 😉

graduation

This, along with a couple of other new items, have been posted in  my etsy shop, although it’s probably a bit late to get any sales on it now! I also made some new bookmarks, posted to flickr, that will be posted in the shop this week. (Oh, and last week, I got a pretty new banner for my shop courtesy of etsy seller the photospot. I think it looks great!)

In addition to the graduation party, Rand and I were able to hang out with my friend Anita, who lives on the west coast. She happened to be in town visiting her parents, so yay!

anita and me

Before we left for PA, Rand and I noticed that the stuff in our refrigerator wasn’t really as cold as it should be. I turned up the temp a couple of notches, and we decided to wait until we got back to worry about it.

Sure enough, there was no improvement when we got back. We did a little bit of research, and determined that it wasn’t worth trying to have it repaired. This morning, Rand went into work a bit late so that we could go to Sears and look for a new one. It’ll be delivered tomorrow. (It’s a Kenmore, in white…nothing fancy. Because our space is limited, we didn’t really have a whole lot of options. The new one is much better than what we have, and is Energy Star rated.) In the meantime, everything perishable is either in the freezer, which is still pretty much working (not 100%, but enough), or in coolers.

So today, other than dealing with that, I’ve been cleaning up the kitchen, reading submissions for Toasted Cheese, taking care of some stuff Rand and I are selling on Amazon, and getting my car inspected. The inspection wouldn’t have been bad, but my check engine light was on, and so I had to pay for the diagnostic so they could figure out how to get it to shut off…but still, relatively painless. I’m good for another year, by which point we will probably have gotten a new car.

Hmmm…was that all? The excitement of my life knows no bounds…
