Peanut butter sadness

For whatever reason, peanut butter is one of those products for which I have brand loyalty. It’s always been Peter Pan. Creamy.

So imagine my dismay when I heard about the recall. I checked the unopened jar I had in the cupboard, and sure enough, it had the incriminating serial number stamped on the top.

I threw it away. I didn’t bother saving the lid, because I decided I didn’t really need the $1.69 that badly.

And when I went to Wegman’s yesterday, I thought I’d be able to buy more.

Sadly, I was mistaken. The shelves were empty; the tainted jars removed, and none there to replace them.

I picked up a jar of Wegman’s brand peanut butter. I figured for 99 cents, I’d give it a go.

Sigh. Highly disappointing.

I want my peanut butter back! Without salmonella, of course. (Which leads me to ask…how exactly does peanut butter get contaminated with salmonella? Hmmm? Maybe I don’t really want to know…)

  1. Have you tried all-natural peanut-butter? I was a big fan of Jif/Skippy growing up, but then I discovered all-natural peanut butter. I now love a peanut butter whose ingredient is: peanuts. Sometimes salt. (I cheat and like the salted peanut butter.)

If you haven’t tried it, I recommend it highly. It may not be for everyone, but to me it feels like finally eating peanut butter after eating peanut-flavored margarine for years.

    YMMV. (Your Mileage May Vary.)

  2. We don’t have Peter Pan peanut butter in Canada, or at least I’ve never seen any. I’m a peanut butter fan, too; I’ll have to try some next time I visit. But here’s the big question: crunchy or smooth for you? From the pic, I’d guess smooth. I’m crunchy, though Jeff is smooth and most of the slow cooker recipes with peanut butter call for smooth, so these days we’re a smooth peanut butter household.

And I’ve gone on way too long about peanut butter, I think.

  3. David L.: I tried all-natural and loved it, but you have to refrigerate it and stir it up each time you use it (or at least this particular brand did), and it always had an unappealing layer of oil on top whenever I opened the jar. I’m a lazy type who’s used to the peanut-flavoured margarine varieties, I suppose.

  4. Debbie-I agree w/you on the all-natural. I have tried it, and it’s good for when I just want a spoonful of peanut butter, but otherwise, well…I’ve never even tried to spread it on bread. It just seems like it would be a disaster.

  5. By the way, “peanut butter sadness” struck me as a wonderfully funny title for a blog entry for some reason. All this peanut butter talk made me crave peanut butter today, so right after posting my comment, I made myself some peanut butter and jam on whole wheat toast.

Though I recently got hooked on peanut butter and marmite on toast. Have you tried this?

  6. I eat peanut butter everyday for breakfast and I am quite happy with Food Club store brand. No doubt Peter Pan tastes better but when you never taste it you have no way to compare and thus are happy with the lesser peanut butter. And all of you are right. Natural peanut butter is for eating off a spoon, not spreading on bread. But it is very tasty off a spoon.

  7. Debbie-I’ve never tried Marmite. It frightens me. šŸ˜‰

Ray, what are you doing with the peanut butter that prevents you from tasting it?? šŸ™‚

  8. I have 2 jars of Peter Pan in the cupboard… I had to buy jif. I was rather disappointed. I have always been a Peter Pan kinda girl.

  9. MY–YOU GOT TONS OF COMMENTS ON THE PETERPAN PEANUT BUTTER TOPIC. I WAS GREATLY DISAPPOINTED TO FIND THAT WE HAD A UNOPENED JAR OF 2111 AND A HALF EATEN JAR IN OUR CABINET.
WONDER WHY WE HAVE BEEN HAVING TUMMY PROBLEMS LATELY???
