And the search begins

Oh, let’s face it…the search had already begun when I found that lovely (cheap) dress on eBay. The more I thought about it, the more wary I became of making such a purchase. It’s not that I don’t believe the sellers are on the level. The feedback is overall very positive, but there are lots of whatifs. What if I don’t like it, what if it doesn’t fit what if the fabric/colors are wrong, etc…and then I start writing sad short stories in my head about the twelve-year-old Chinese girls who are sewing the dresses…but I digress.

No, we haven’t set a date yet, but that’s not stopping me from looking at pretty things!

Anyway, I did some homework and identified the dress I’m so enamoured of as a Maggie Sottero Eleganza style.

I haven’t been able to see this one in person, but I did venture out (by myself) yesterday to try on a few dresses. I did see the strapless version of Eleganza:

It’s beautiful. Also, it’s discontinued, so its not too crazy expensive. I think I like the off-the-shoulder version better, though.

I also tried on Grace Kelly:

Which is also quite lovely. Very elegant. And heavy… 😉

And finally…a few years ago, when Susan was looking for her gown and bridesmaid’s gowns, I tried on one that I thought was pretty, just for fun. I was in that shop yesterday, and that gown that I tried on? Is in their $99 room. I’m kind of tempted to buy it just because, hello? $99! It could be sold on eBay if need be. Obviously, it’s an older style, so I can’t find a photo of it online.

So yeah, I don’t know. 😀

  1. Of these three, I like the top one best, the the bottom. I think the middle one… you don’t know where to look.

    If you remember a dress from years before and now you can find it for $99? BUY IT. Like you said, if it isn’t The One, sell it on eBay for $100 and voila. You’ve lost nothing.

  3. At one time, I thought about wearing my grandmother’s gown. I may still look into that option. (Probably not my mom’s. It was the 70s…heehee)

    I would stay away from any seller in China at this point. This seller you are looking at is located there.

  6. Ho-OH-ly cow. I’d say if you *really* loved that one that’s in the $99 room now, you should get it!

    Especially if you don’t mind the hassle of potentially selling it on ebay later. (That part would probably daunt me, because of shipping and whatnot. So take that into account.)

    But only wear it if you loved it. Hold out for the one that’s just what you want. 🙂

  8. I looooooooooooove the first one…but can also imagine what you could do with $1400 if you decided to go for the $99 dress. Which I remember being beautiful, but can’t remember another thing about it! PERHAPS Mama Nappe could manipulate the $99 gown and give it those lovely sleeves.

    And now that you know what you like…you can bring those pictures to the store and have recommendations on others. Plus, I’m thinking of Mary…she said to the dressmaker that she did not want this, this and that…and yet they gave her *the dress* which had this, this and that and it was THE PRETTIEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN on her. Perfection.

    I think we need a trip to Toronto…

  9. It’s not like I don’t have time to make this decision… 😉 I just can’t help but LOOK, y’know?

    The $99 is strapless, more white than ivory but not WHITE white, has that side-gathered ruching thing going on, and has little embroidered pastel flowers. (which sounds hideous, but it’s really not!)

  10. I love the Grace Kelly, but promise me you won’t do your makeup like that. Hellooooo, palette knife! 🙂

    Things I don’t understand #475: purses to match wedding dresses. Is someone out there worried that they’ll need some change at the end of the aisle?
