Again, they look fabulous π
Nice article π
I have to say this, and would have commented on the article had the option been allowed: I do not believe lipstick is essential. I, like dana boyd and others, resent the constant analogy of women blogging to coffee clatch gossip sessions and other “girly” outlets. I know there were some really deep examples in the article, but the title says more. And yes, I am VERY aware from personal experience of how much gets changed, cut, and taken out of context in these pieces.
I recently and without much explanation took a hiatus from blogging, though I continue to PAY for my server space and learn PHP and MySQL skills a little at a time to make appearance and operational changes. In short, to become more nerdy. In my field it is a necessity that I keep up with and even surpass the skills of my male counterparts. I have also been criticised for disclosing too much about myself (and as well, too little!!!!) and am sure my blogging, though perhaps at times a doorway into an interview, has also been the death knell for the gold medal (the job).
As someone whose blogged for over 5 years, making you a pioneer of the medium, I’d like to see mention of the nerdness you’ve worked so hard to achieve, of the hours you’ve spent researching code to make changes or solve problems. As someone who knows you personally and has at times run roughshod right over you in conversation due to my excitable and chatty ways, I can understand fully why this medium suits you. I fully support you as a friend and woman in pursuing all forms of creativity you choose to pursue. I also enjoy seeing you and interacting, even if I do need a kick in the arse once in awhile. π
Still and all, congratulations on the piece, and what a gorgeous photo of you. As for the others well, the only time one of them used her power as a woman to potentially promote another woman (me) in this male dominated world of tech, she made fun of me for joining the last century and getting a cell phone. I guess it can be a catty place too, and part of why it’s time for this jennimi to take a little break.
When approached for the article, I was told it was about women making connections/friendships with other women through their blogs.
Um. Well, at least my section of the story seemed to be focused on that. The rest was just stories on women, who blog.
And of course I said more than making friends and asking them about what I’m going to wear tonight, but that fits the lipstick title and ignores the countless people I call my friends who I met first though a blog.
First line I put up in my post?
“And in case youβre wondering, my blog is as essential as deodorant. I rarely wear lipstick.”
See, I was told it was an article about why women blog…but oh well.
Did you email the writer of the article?
I had a few comments on it. He replied quickly to my letter.
