So, how do you break up with your hairstylist?
I started seeing this guy in Orchard Park on the recommendation of a former coworker, and he’s great. I trust him, and I like what he does with my hair. On the other hand:
1. The salon is in Orchard Park. It seems like a waste of time, money and natural resources to keep driving to Orchard Park to get my hair done.
2. His schedule is insane. It took me nearly two months from the time I originally called to get an appointment. Once in, they make you schedule two appointments out, and if you have to cancel…well, good luck getting another one.
3. Did I mention the drive to Orchard Park?
So, I’ve cancelled an appointment I’d made for this coming Tuesday evening. I’m not in dire need of a haircut, but I am looking for a new place…one much closer to home. And back to my original question…what do you do? Do you just stop going and never be heard from again? Or do you say something? Hm…I just don’t know.
Anyway, that’s the big thing on my mind today. Aren’t you glad I posted? 😉
You already know my hairstylist breakup story – I just stopped going.
There must be 50 ways to leave your stylist. Keep him out of your hair, Cher. Go without the rinse, Vince. Keep away from the curl, Shirl. (Write your own!)
Unless he’s done a botch, I think you’re ok just sliding away without word. If he messed up, that would be a different story, he should know. But, it looks like he has good business (there’s a reason he was recommended) and that is a serious drive. And if he calls wondering, you can say all the things you say here… drive, hard to get appt, really like him but it’s just not gonna be doable.
Only one hair stylist has ever known the wrath of jennimi. And I mean WRATH! Impoverished and jobless, I had to go to one of those places where they have fake names like “Sunshine” and “Daisy.” It was such a hack job I ran out screaming at the girl and her manager who actually had the nerve not to admit wrongdoing and threatened to call the five oh if I didn’t pay them their measly blood money. How do you mess up a bob on STRAIGHT HAIR? Well, tragically, I know exactly how. I sold cds and borrowed money to go to a “fancy” (at the time) salon on Allen to have it fixed, which basically meant going as short as Scott’s is now and starting over. That was ’95. I still go to the same building, which was ultimately purchased by one of the stylists, my stylist.
Allen is far for you still, but if nothing turns up out your way, I have gotten many a satisfied customer over to Renee at Salon Bandelian. (next to the Gate). She goes conservative, until she gets to know you. No crazy stuff until she can tell you really mean it. And, she is the first person to be able to handle Scott’s Alfalfa cowlick brilliantly (not that you have one, but as a measure of her skilz).
Sorry to get long winded. But this post brought back some memories. 🙂 Good luck E, you always look great!
with respect to your current stylist, iwould agree with jennimi…a silent departure is okay…i get my hair cut at Bellezza which is near you on the corner of Main and Evans…Jen L. cuts my hair…although any of the girls are excellent…the one bad thing is the parking…if there is nowhere in the lot on the side of the business (on evans) or in front on the street, you need to keep circling or double park in the lot and they will move your car if need be…haircuts range from $38 (i think) to $43…i pay $43!
a friend of mine works at Salon Bandelian…i have never been there but hear it’s awesome! it’s just too far for me to travel!
good luck! nicole
I must say that having a hairstylist for a best friend is THE way to go! 🙂
Hey, thanks for the thoughts and recommendations everyone!
Nicole–glad to see you around! I wasn’t sure if you were still reading. I’ll give Bellezza a look. I was paying around $40 at the place in OP.
J–sorry to bring up such traumatic hair memories! 😉 If I lived in the city, I would totally check out your salon.
S–if only that were an option for me. Hehe. 😉
if you must say something, tell him it’s been great, but the commute is killing you. and if you are parting on really good terms, he might have a recommendation for somewhere for you to go. i find it’s good to get recommendations from stylists for stylists – they usually know good work. just my 2 cents. 🙂
erin, suck it up, one must make sacrifices in the pursuit of beauty
I hope to god the salon isn’t Michael’s in Orchard Park. I had a horrible experience there with a hairstylist named Stephen.
I would find someplace closer and they don’t have to be notified that you are changing.
I know this is a late post, but try Jim (or any of his staf) at Phoenix in Williamsville on Main in the small complex with Creekview Restaurant. I’m a So Cal transplant of 3 years, and I’ve tried elsewhere (to serious haircut HELL in the name of saving $$$), and frankly, his team is the best I’ve encountered.
