Ugh.
I left the apartment shortly after 7, was out most of the morning, and returned to the apartment around 12:30. I lasted about an hour before I had to get OUT. Bleah.
Luckily, the nights haven’t been too horrible, and the fans have been keeping me cool enough to sleep through the night.
This makes me want to vow that the next place I live will have A/C.
I’ve never lived in a place with central air. Growing up, I hardly remember feeling like I needed it. I mean, we lived in Pennsylvania, right? You don’t need central air in PA. I spent my summer afternoons at the community pool, and the nights were generally reasonable.
Two apartments ago, I lived on the third floor. I went out and bought myself a window unit, because I lived in the attic. It got downright disgusting up there during the summer. Because of the alarm system and the location of my bedroom window, the unit had to go in my living room. Therefore, I slept on my futon when it got too warm to sleep in the bedroom. The system worked well enough.
But the windows in that apartment were tiny. In order to make the unit fit, I had to remove one of the side panels. I promptly lost the panel I removed. So when I moved, the unit became useless to me.
And even if I hadn’t lost the panel, it would be useless to me now. My current apartment has windows that open left to right, not top to bottom. No window A/C unit for me. 🙁
But seriously. This is ridiculous. There’s a reason many of us choose not to live in North Carolina and Florida. Well, many reasons…but this is definitely one of them.
If it makes you feel any better, we were suffering through 100+ degree weather here in southern California throughout much of July. So I feel your pain. And sweat. And all that yucky stuff.
Due to the inexplicable lack of a door, my office upstairs is a sauna!
I didn’t have central air until I built my own house…now I have vowed never to live without it again. No, seriously, it was a deal-breaker in my recent apartment hunting.
It’s also a reason some of us moved to Georgia! I love the hot weather of the south. Not so much the insanely hot weather we have had in Northern CA. Get me back to GA! I’ll take that any day. Never had threats of rolling black outs there.
The heat wave appears to be over for the moment, BUT… I have the same type of windows. They are pretty easy to remove, and then with a bit of plywood a few screws and brackets, you’ll be livin’ lovely.
