Thursday Thoughts

First off, a big happy birthday shout-out to Eden!

Right now, the big thought on my mind is “one more day until break!” I so need this…time to regroup and recharge. This week hasn’t actually been bad. I had an observation earlier in the week, and I think it went really well.

I had a bunch of other things I was going to talk about, but my brain is moving into shutdown mode. I skipped “Wedding Wednesday” this week, because seriously? Who can think about weddings this close to Christmas? (er, I’m sure the answer is “lots of people.” Just not me!)

Don’t forget…this Saturday, you can see Greg Klyma with special guests Ookla the Mok at Madame Mocha’s on Lovejoy! (contact me for more info)

Thursday Thoughts (er, sort of)

Busy days…in lieu of a typical “Thursday Thoughts” post, I wanted to share a few upcoming musical events!

Tomorrow night at the California Brew Haus in Rochester, we have…er…”Nipplepalooza III” (no, I don’t know why it’s called that) featuring:

Ookla the Mok
Worm Quartet
Carla Ulbrich
Rob Balder
and Sudden Death

Show begins at 9:30. $5, 21 and over, $7 under. (more info at the Worm Quartet link)

I have to say, I’m most looking forward to seeing Carla, because it’s been quite a long time.

Saturday night (and every Saturday in December), Greg Klyma and Tom Bianchi will be at Madame Mocha’s, 1190 Lovejoy Street in Buffalo. I’ve never been there, but I’m told it’s a great venue, and Greg and Tom are always fun!

And next Saturday, of course, is Lowest of the Low at Club Infinity. I think those tickets are $28.

See you there?

Weekend wrap-up

It was a pretty low-key weekend, and that’s fine by me. Friday evening, I met Rand for dinner in the city. We ended up going to Mythos on Elmwood. I ordered soup with my meal–they were out of the lemon chicken rice, so I went with the Italian wedding soup. What I got didn’t resemble any Italian wedding soup I’ve ever seen. It had a chicken broth base, and it had meatballs in it. That was about it.

My meal (some sort of chicken and pasta dish that was on the specials menu) was pretty good, but I don’t think it agreed with me.

On Saturday, we met up with John at IHoP, a place I go approximately once a year. This *is* the time of year to do it, though, because Pumpkin Pancakes! I was a little grumpy (it was too crowded and too cold, and our server annoyed me more than once), but the pancakes were good.

Came home and hung the new sheers on the window, which arrived in like two days! Awesome.

Rand and I stopped at a thrift store, and I picked up a couple of paperbacks. One of them was this book, (one of my favorite childhood books) in fantastic condition:

but that’s not all!

I don’t know who Christine is, or why she didn’t want this anymore, but it’s mine now!

Speaking of signed copies, I’m very pleased to have this:

I have awesome friends…

Sunday, we had Ookla-related stuff to attend to–a comics/memorabilia show at the Millennium Hotel. The guys played a few songs and sold a few CDs.

And today is still part of my weekend…I’ve been keeping busy shopping, doing laundry, and reading. And now, I’m about to go have an eye exam…something I’m long overdue for.

Finally, just a note of thanks to all the veterans out there.

I may add to this later, but that’ll do for now. Gotta run!

The new Less Than Art is here!

When I came home yesterday, I was greeted by a big pile-o-boxes…which means that the new and improved Less Than Art 10th Anniversary Edition has arrived!

LTA cover

Rand is working on getting it up on CD Baby (at which point it will also be available on iTunes, I believe), but those of you who will see us this weekend will be able to have a copy in your little hands!

I’ve heard it, and it’s really, really good. All the songs are remixed and remastered from their original recordings, and they sound fantastic! 🙂

(For those unaware, Less Than Art is Ookla The Mok’s first album. It includes such classics as Home, Dollar Fifty Movies, Arthur Curry, and Tiberius Rising.)

Week in review

Well, I’m finally able to breathe a bit…grades for two classes are DONE. I’m reading portfolios for my third class, started today, and I have plenty of time to finish them. I’m calculating their final grades as I go along. The fourth class finished up their writing exit exams yesterday. I’m in the home stretch!

I’m working today, and I’ve found myself with an extra free period, so I figured I’d share what I’ve been up to in the past week other than grading papers!

Last Saturday was Free Comic Book Day. Rand and Wolfram made an appearance at Queen City Comics on Main Street.

wolfram and rand

We started the day with breakfast with Wolfram and his wife Rai-an at Amy’s Place, then headed over to the shop at around 11. The guys played three sets with short breaks in between. Small crowds would gather now and then, and several people bought copies of Super Secret. Emil got us pizza from Just Pizza for lunch, which I didn’t realize how much I’d missed until that moment. Later, I was browsing a discount rack in the shop and came across a fun Alias book (a book about the tv show, not the comic). It came with a bonus DVD and has a full episode guide–something the box set is missing. I was contemplating buying it when Emil told me to take it as a gift. Aw…thanks, Emil!

Saturday evening, we met up with jennimi and Scott for dinner at Anchor Bar, and then went to see the Shredd & Ragan Comedy Fest. The Comedy Fest featured Mike Birbiglia, a very, very funny comedian. He was the reason we went. The rest of the so-called fest featured Evil Jim (who really shouldn’t ever do stand-up…eep.), Tom Tran (very funny) and Matt Bergman (pretty funny).

On Sunday, we spent some time visiting Rand’s brother and SIL and their new baby, Aiden.

What a little cutie, eh?

The rest of the week has been kind of a blur. I finished reading The Golden Compass and am nearly finished with The Subtle Knife. I’m really, really liking them. Heroes and Lost both rocked my world this week. I was unsurprised that LaKisha was voted off of Idol this week. (by the way…TiVo is the best thing EVER. I can zip through an episode of AI in 20 minutes.) Yoga continues to be amazing.

There’s probably more, but that’s gonna be it for now, I think. Back to class for me.

Happy Friday, everyone!

Busy workin’

I’ve been working a lot to bring home the big bucks (ha), which means less computer time. I managed to upload some photos to flickr this morning, so you can check those out.

I’ll have more details up when I get the chance.

free comics!

Happy Monday!

Busy, busy

I have a lot of things I want to write about. I also have a bunch of essays I need to read before tomorrow. Bleah.

A fun (if tiring!) weekend was had…both Ookla shows were lots of fun. My parents were in town for the Nietzsche’s show and got to see Rand in action for the first time. They seemed to enjoy it. They also liked Greg Klyma, which didn’t surprise me a bit!

Rand and I have stepped up our Netflix viewing, so I have several movies to report on…among them The Passion of the Christ, Stranger than Fiction, Let’s Go To Prison, ummm….I’m drawing a blank. But there have been a bunch in the past couple of weeks.

I wrote about this at Required Reading over the weekend, but I’ve joined a fun little site called goodreads. Check out my profile here and be my friend! 🙂

Big Ookla weekend

I know there were at least a couple of people who wanted to make it to the last show and couldn’t, so I just wanted to remind you about this weekend’s Ookla events. 🙂

The band will be in Rochester tonight at the California Brew Haus–the show is scheduled to start at 9.

Tomorrow, they’ll be playing an early set at Nietzsche’s along with Greg Klyma and Tom Bianchi. Show starts at 7 and should be over by 10, as Big Leg Emma is scheduled to take the back stage at 10.

Hope to see you there!

Ookla pimpage

Hey, I almost forgot…I told Rand I’d mention this on the blog today!

Ookla spent some time in the studio remixing and remastering their CD Less Than Art, which has been out-of-print for quite some time. It was quite worth the effort, because it sounds fantastic! You can hear a couple of the tracks on Ookla’s myspace page.

For more Ookla-related news, check randland. (gasp! he actually posted!)

Finally, for those of you who missed the February show, or for those who are dying for another, the guys have three (count ’em, three!) shows coming up in April.

On April 13, they’ll be at the California Brew Haus in Rochester. On the 14th, they’ll be at Nietzsche’s with Greg Klyma and Tom Bianchi (Greg and Tom are great musicians and all-around awesome guys. You can’t go wrong here!).

Then, on April 27, they’ll be back at Nietzsche’s. Details are at the myspace page, and I would guess on the Ookla website as well.

Ookla rocks Mohawk, and other weekend highlights

Wow, what a crazybusy weekend we had here!

For those who may not know, we had a documentary film crew in town filming lots-n-lots of Ookla for the Filk Film Project. Three of the four crew members–Jim Hanks, and Erin and Darrin Kean–were here. Jim’s wife Karen wasn’t able to make the trip.

They arrived in Buffalo Thursday afternoon, and filmed Rand’s poetry class Thursday evening. On Friday, they went with Adam to one of his Amazing Me school presentations and then followed Wolfram to his job.

On Friday night, the guys had a short rehearsal. I came out and snapped a few photos with my phone.

We ate an absolutely insane amount of food over the weekend. Saturday morning, Rand and I took Jim out to the Original Pancake House for breakfast before bringing him to Squeaky Wheel, where the crew graciously did a Q&A session with a documentary filmmaking class of high school students. The kids were interested and inquisitive, and it was a lot of fun to watch.

After Squeaky Wheel, more food! We tried Pano’s, but it was pretty busy, so we went to Gabriel’s Gate instead.

Jim, Adam and Joe

Later that afternoon, we headed out to Duff’s in Orchard Park, where Adam has a regular gig drawing caricatures. A cameraman from channel 7 met them there to do a quick interview.

And then we ate again. Some more. I just had a snack…many wings were consumed. I didn’t take any photos at Duff’s.

Following Duff’s, we had an open evening. Erin had said that she wanted to see Children of Men. A quick peek in Artvoice let us know that it was playing at the Dollar Fifty Movies. (That’d be the Movieland at Walden and Harlem. Side note–the dollar fifty movies now cost $3. But still, pretty cheap.) So Erin, Darrin, Wolfram, Rai-an, Rand, Jim and I went to see the movie, which was utterly amazing. It deserves its own post, so I’m going to save further thoughts on the movie for that post.

Sunday, breakfast at the Pancake House again, then out to Lockport to Watchmen Studios. The crew wanted some visuals of the guys recording and ended up with some fun stuff.

wolfram and erin

Then, lunch. Rand and I took the crew to Towne, which was a mostly pleasant experience but for our, um, slightly-less-than-smart waitress. Luckily, we weren’t in much of a hurry. 😉

The guys had a sound check at around five, which gave me a great opportunity to get some photos. I experimented with the different flash settings on the camera. Here’s a blurry Rand.

The concert was fantastic. Mohawk Place was literally packed with friends, family and fans who came out to support the guys. jennimi wrote a great post about the concert, which did indeed rock. Thomas posted some photos at his cameraphone blog, and Lady Turpentine bravely put off her homework to come out. 😉 Celia has some photos up here. I don’t think I could possibly begin to name everyone else I saw/talked to at the show.

At the end of the evening, one of Rand’s coworkers and one of her friends were excited to meet Jim Hanks, not because of his famous brother, but because of his work as Geoffrey the Giraffe. Who knew there were Geoffrey fans out there? 😉 That was fun to watch, and Jim was incredibly good-natured about it. (Jim Hanks could not be a nicer guy. Really.)

The weekend was long and exhausting, but I had such a great time. Jim, Erin and Darrin are all just the most wonderful, sweetest people you’d ever want to meet. It was too bad Karen couldn’t make it, because I’d have liked to spend more time with her as well. 🙂

Whew! Now I recover and try to grade papers…
