Lazy, rainy Sunday

Rand and I are sitting here watching women’s gymnastics. I’m having a hard time understanding this new scoring system…although I think they just explained it in a way that makes sense. Sort of.  😉

We saw our parents yesterday…they both came to Buffalo to visit, and we went out for lunch. We had a very nice day. My parents brought a CD with wedding photos, and I started working on uploading them to flickr. I still have *lots* more.

We also got a couple of CDs in the mail from Debbie, and I haven’t even begun to look at them yet. 🙂

Last night, Rand and I went to see Pineapple Express. It was funny. Extremely violent, but funny. 😉

Ok, enough for me…G’night!

New haircut and other stuff (with photos!)

haircut-front view

I got my hair cut today. Since I was no longer worried about what my hair would look like for the wedding, I let my stylist basically do whatever he wanted.  Here’s the side view:

He took A LOT of hair. I like it. What do you think?

And now, here are pictures of those cookies. (I’ll have to go back and add pics to the cookie post, too…)

ready to bake

Aside–these SILPAT mats are *magic*. Love them.

More wedding goodness!

If you haven’t already seen it, my post about our awesome photographers is here.

And I just put up one about Jen, my awesome wedding hostess.

And fear not, there is yet more wedding awesomeness to come…I am SO not finished. 😉

Inspiring story

I graduated from high school with this guy…and back in the days when I was a reporter, I interviewed him for a story. The story got picked up by the AP, and they used the photo that I took with it. I got a little check for the photo.

To sum up, Craig Dietz–a Pittsburgh attorney who was born without arms or legs–competed in a triathalon.

You’ll have to click here to see the story.

iPhone envy

apple-iphone.jpg

Sigh. I want an iPhone.

I am filled with envy as I watch my Canadian friends and acquaintances shout with glee over receiving their new iPhones.

The problem? I’m a Verizon customer. Stupid Steve Jobs and his stupid deal with AT&T. My contract is up in December…do I make the move?

This makes me a little sad, because I’ve been happy with Verizon since I first got my cell phone. Plus, a bunch of my family members are on Verizon, which means free in-network calls. Who has AT&T? Are you happy with their service?

The options, as I see them, are as follows:

1. When my “new every two” is available (in a couple weeks), I can get a wannabe iPhone from Verizon.
2. I can wait out my contract and switch to AT&T.
3. I can do nothing and wait until Apple breaks the contract with AT&T and offers the iPhone on other carriers.

What do you think? 🙂

Makin’ cupcakes

mixer!

So, for my maiden voyage with the new KitchenAid mixer (pictured above!), I decided to make some cupcakes.

Rachel and Brian gave us this cool cupcake pan/carrier:

cupcake carrier & mix

It’s from Crate & Barrel. They also included a box of cupcake and frosting mix, but I opted to try something from scratch. Also in their package, this fun book:

500 Cupcakes: The Only Cupcake Compendium You'll Ever Need

I found several recipes I wanted to try, but opted for the one that included the fewest amount of ingredients I did not have in the house: Devil’s Food Cupcakes. All I needed was milk, which I was able to pick up at the gas station on the corner. Instead of making the frosting that was suggested with the cupcake recipe, I made a fudge frosting from the previous page…it involved heating butter, milk, and chocolate (I used chocolate chips) on the stove, then mixing in confectioner’s sugar.

The mixer is every bit as awesome as everyone says. 🙂

I used the carrier to bring the cupcakes to Fuji Grill, where we were meeting Ron, Melissa, and several of Melissa’s friends and family for a birthday gathering. They were a hit.

Personally, I liked the cupcakes just fine, but I disagree with their classification as “devil’s food.” I’d have called them chocolate. Anyone have a good devil’s food cake recipe to share with me?

This recipe, for reference:

2 c. self-rising flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 c. light brown sugar
1 c. (2 sticks) sweet butter, softened
2 separated eggs
3 1/2 oz. semisweet chocolate, melted
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 c. milk

Sift flour/baking powder and set aside. Cream sugar and butter in medium bowl. Add egg yolks and beat well. Add melted chocolate and vanilla, mixing well. Add flour and milk alternately, beating well with each addition. Beat egg whites in a medium bowl until soft peaks form, and gently fold into batter.

Bake at 350 for 20 minutes

Lyrics posted

I posted the lyrics to Greg Klyma’s wedding song for us over at the wedding blog. I never did find them…I had to email Greg and ask him to send them to me. He happily obliged.

Speaking of Greg, don’t forget…show at Broadway Joe’s this Friday w/Tom Bianchi and Ookla! 🙂 Details a few posts back.

Stuff we’ve been watching

Movies:

While on our honeymoon, we veged out in the room a couple of evenings and watched some DVDs we brought along. We watched The Muppets Take Manhattan, which was timely, what with the wedding and all. That one always makes me cry. 😉

We also watched Never Been Kissed, which is one of my favorite cheesy girly flicks. I, of course, have seen it numerous times. Rand had never seen it, though.

And finally, we watched Talladega Nights: the Ballad of Ricky Bobby, courtesy of Netflix. Silly movie, of course, but I laughed quite a bit. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are hilarious together…so I am a bit interested in seeing Step Brothers. Oh, and Amy Adams is utterly adorable. Of course. 😉

This past week, we went out to the movies a couple of times. We saw Hancock, which was not even remotely the movie I thought it was going to be, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It was nice to see Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron together again. (by the way, I barely recognized Charlize Theron through most of the movie, except as a pretty blonde woman I *knew* I was supposed to recognize. She’s sort of chameleonlike.)

*Mistah efff*

Moving on, for those of you who didn’t watch Arrested Development. 😉

We also saw Wall-E, which was every bit as good as everyone says it was.

TV:

Oh, VH1, you will be the death of me yet…I can walk away from the reality/dating shows, but I simply cannot get enough of your lists/I love the (insert decade of choice here), with your snarky comedians and actors. So yeah, a lot of that. We also watched VH1 Rock Honors–The Who (of course. You all know who I live with, right?), which was quite enjoyable.

Last night, we got sucked into Bender’s Big Score (the first Futurama movie) on Comedy Central, despite having seen it already.

On DVD, we’ve been watching Sex and The City (which you know already if you follow me on Twitter). Season 3, how I hate you. We finished it. Gah. Stupid Carrie. Stupid Big. Anyway.

We also got Spaced, and we watched the first episode. Looks fun. Very funny. Very British. I like.

Things I still want to see:

Mamma Mia. Oh, how I love love loved this cheesy stage show. Loved. And every time I see a preview for the movie, I grin like an idiot. Must see. Must see in theater.

Kung Fu Panda. This will probably be in the cheap theater soon. That’s okay with me.

Step Brothers. Already mentioned.

I kind of want to see Get Smart, but I can wait for DVD.

I’m not sure I want to see The Dark Knight, but I have a feeling I will.

See, here’s the thing…I liked the first Batman movie. I liked that it wasn’t overly dark and serious. I don’t like dark crime movies. They depress me. I’m sure it’s every bit as good as everyone says, but…eh.

So, what have you been watching?
