Farewells

I wish I had time to share my thoughts about the first week of school. Alas, I do not. Tonight, Rand and I will be heading to Cleveland–usually, my trips to Cleveland are happy ones to spend time with friends. This time, though, we will be saying goodbye to one.

My friend Jen’s mom lost her battle with breast cancer this week. She was a beautiful, vibrant woman with a heart full of love, and she will be dearly missed by many people.

Donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure (link is to the Team Russo homepage).

I also learned, when I got home from school today, that Madeline L’Engle, author of my favorite book, died today. I’ll post more thoughts about that one at a later time.

Happy day!

Debbie is set to arrive in Buffalo for a visit *very* soon! Whee! Between the visiting and the school starting this week, I suspect I’m going to be a very busy girl. Look for photos on flickr soon, though! 🙂

What I did today

I drove to Ohio and tried on this gown:

very serious

I don’t know why I look so serious…but it’s a better shot than the one where I’m smiling. 😉

Oh, and I’m standing on a stool.

Update: I thought a little more info might be in order. 😉

The dress I’m trying on above is this dress…the one I’ve been eying since I found the designer copies on eBay. I found the designer (Maggie Sottero) and style (Eleganza) by poking around online. I found local shops that carry Maggie Sottero dresses, but I learned that Eleganza had been discontinued.

With the help of Google, I found two people who were selling the dress on craigslist. One of them was in Ohio, just over three hours from me. I decided that it was worth my time to drive out and see it in person. Unfortunately, no one was available to accompany me, so I had the woman who is selling it take a bunch of pictures for me. It was kind of a strange (but not bad!) experience, and I felt goofy doing my big smile in all the photos. My expression has nothing to do with my feelings about the dress. 😉

It is absolutely stunning in person. It really is. And it’s a great deal. The woman is selling it for her future daughter-in-law, who bought the dress and then decided to have a much more casual wedding.

It would need some alteration. The girl who bought it is only an inch or two taller than me, and she was assured that it could be shortened without losing any of the detail. It’s also a teeny bit big (but not much) in the bodice area.

I know I don’t need to make this decision yet. I’ve loved many of the dresses I’ve tried on and can see myself wearing several of them. I’m just waiting for one to say PICK ME!!

😉

School daze

So I spent a good chunk of yesterday in my classroom. I can’t say I accomplished much, but I was in my classroom. 😉

As I believe I’ve mentioned before, the school where I’m going to be working is undergoing extensive renovations. The bulk of the work was supposed to be finished by the end of summer…and, well…

When I arrived yesterday all of the stuff (desk, computer, shelves, etc.) was in the middle of the room. New student desks and chairs were in big cardboard boxes. I was going to move the textbooks over to one of the new countertops, but then I realized that the counter wasn’t actually attached to the wall yet. I wandered about the school for a little bit, picking up a massive pile of mail (mostly book order sheets), student agendas and a desk calendar. I met with my co-teacher, who will be with me for two of the five classes I’m teaching, and planned out the activities for next week. (That, at least, makes me feel a little bit better!)

After lunch, I began opening the cardboard boxes the teacher had packed up at the end of last year and tried to get some of it put away. Everyone’s kind of in the same boat–unpacking boxes–but I’m in the unique position of unpacking someone else’s boxes. I couldn’t really do anything with the desk since there were still things unfinished, and the phone and computer hadn’t been installed yet. The school will be open today, so I may head over there this afternoon to see how things look.

Possibly the worst thing about it is that everything is still covered with a layer of construction dust and grime.  I picked up some Clorox wipes yesterday to try and get some spaces clean enough that I felt comfortable putting things on them.
I just got my schedule yesterday, and I don’t have class lists yet.  I can log on to the computer (well, whenever it gets hooked up), but I don’t yet have access to email or other necessary classroom applications. Those things won’t be dealt with until, uh, Tuesday morning.

Isn’t this fun? 😉

More things I’ve tried on…

michelle

I tried this on in “diamond white,” which is slightly whiter than ivory, but slightly less white than white. The color pictured is light gold. It comes in a reasonable-priced version with glass beads, or an expensive version with Swarovski crystals.

barcelona

(ignore the fugly hair thing)
I liked this one a great deal. However, it only comes in white and diamond white, and I’m liking the deeper, more champagne and gold colors. It’s also a bit more expensive than the others.

So far, my mom and her friend both like Grace Kelly the best.

I did make a brief venture into David’s Bridal. I hated it. I felt like cattle, and I got a superpushy saleslady. Ick.

Free intro yoga classes

My yoga instructor is holding her free intro classes this week. Unfortunately, I forgot to post before yesterday’s class, but there are two more tomorrow, Wednesday Aug. 29. The times are 9:30 am and 7:30 pm.

The studio is in Williamsville. Let me know if you want more info!

Looking for ideas

Particularly from Buffalo/WNY area people.

We still haven’t set a date. We’re currently working on compiling a preliminary guest list so that we can at least have a rough idea of numbers. A small, intimate gathering is clearly out of the picture. 😉

Ideally, we want next spring/summer. Since I have no idea what I’m going to be doing, it’s probably best to try and do it when school won’t be in session. On the other hand, we could always do a postponed honeymoon. Since lots of places are filling up, the exact date is probably going to very much depend on availability.

Here are some of the things we’re looking for:

  • A site where we can have both the ceremony and the reception
  • A place that has the capacity for a large group
  • Indoors (much of the talking we’ve been doing involves activities that will be best served in an indoor location…plus, there’s the weather. If it’s raining, I want to be inside. If it’s hot and humid, I want air conditioning!)
  • Someplace that isn’t crazy expensive

We’re looking at WNY…this is where we live, and its more centrally-located to the majority of people who would be coming. (many friends and members of both of our families would have to travel…) It doesn’t have to be right IN Buffalo. I’m not opposed to considering PA, but the options are much more limited there.

I’m not imagining a terribly formal affair. What’s most important to us is that our friends and family have a good time. I want the food to be tasty, but it doesn’t have to be fancy-schmancy. I would happily serve beef on weck and wings if I could find a place where I could do that.

I’ve checked out the local forums on sites like the knot and the wedding channel, and they are NO help. They’re populated by young Bridey McBrides and just ugh.

So…if you have any suggestions, leave me a comment or send an email! 🙂

*UPDATE* Pearl Street is looking like it could be a very reasonable option, depending on availability of course. Thanks to Jen, for making me look more closely at it!

Ack!

Starting tomorrow, I’m a busy, busy girl…new teacher orientation tomorrow, followed by two days of inservice. Friday off, Monday holiday. Tuesday inservice. Wednesday…school starts!

Holy crap. 😉

I saw my mom on Saturday. She and her friend came up for the day, and we did a bit of dress shopping (no buying, just looking!). We stopped in at the shop where Rand bought my ring and talked to the ladies there. I wanted to let them know how happy (and surprised!) I was. (It’s Sarah’s Vintage and Estate Jewelry on Main Street in Williamsville.  They’re awesome.) Then we had dinner at Brennan’s. I had a Clancy. Yum!

We saw Rand’s parents on Sunday, which was also very nice. 🙂

Today, I met up with Susan for lunch. I hadn’t seen her in quite a while, so that was fun!

And that’s about all my excitement for the moment…I’m guessing posting will be light over the next couple of days.
