I <3 music

I had a bit of time to play with the iPod over the weekend and I created an “erin’s faves” playlist. I listened to it on my way to work this morning (you may be asking how, since I don’t have a working radio…well, I put one bud in my ear and kind of dangle the other one near the other ear. It’s far from ideal, but it’s something), and it so rocks. I should start every day listening to my favorite music.

It’s funny how when you create a playlist of your favorite songs, you’re constantly thinking to yourself, “I love this song!”

Here’s a sampling of what I heard this morning:

  • Here on Earth (Crash Test Dummies)
  • Solar Circle Girl (Einstein’s Sister)
  • La La Land (Ookla the Mok) -aside…it’s a very good thing when your SO’s singing voice gives you the warm fuzzies. Very good indeed. 😉
  • Smoke Baby (Hawksley Workman)
  • Beautiful Chemistry (Ron Hawkins)
  • Skullcrusher Mountain (Jonathan Coulton)
  • We’re All Light (XTC)

I’ve got 73 songs in the playlist right now, and I’m not nearly done. But yay! for music that makes me happy. Yay, I say. 🙂

So, what songs never fail to bring a smile to your face?

  1. Via LiveJournal, Allison says:

“Pretty much anything by The Beatles. Truly. I can be halfway ’round the world and all I have to do is hear a Beatle song in a song circle or musak in a mall and I’m happy.”

  2. Band of Gold by Freda Payne. That song will make me crank the car stereo and sing at the top of my lungs…and I don’t sing.

  3. off the top o’ me head — the first fifteen:

pretty much anything off jellyfish’s spilt milk (joining a fan club, new mistake, ghost at number one, bye bye bye)

earn enough for us — xtc

    bubblegum 45s — jim boggia

    oh yoko — john lennon

    michigan militia — moxy fruvous

    friends forever — puffy amiyumi

don’t you believe a word — sloan (any of the jay songs off of between the bridges)

care of cell 44 — the zombies

    one small day — ultravox

    alone — midge ure

days go on so long — the frogs

    david watts — the kinks

    can’t explain — the who

    all mixed up — 311

still can’t buy me love — ookla the mok (when jodi and i are harmonizing on the second verse — i can’t listen to that without smiling, probably because i have such a clear memory of looking up and seeing her smiling at me whenever we sing it live)

  4. From LD Wheeler, via LJ:

    * Beatles seconded. “Got to Get You Into My Life” is one of the few songs guaranteed to make me dance — I’m talking make as in involuntary imperative.

    * Plus pretty much anything by Ookla or vixyish (including the sadder stuff). To narrow it down: “Mal’s Song.” “Das Uber Tuber.” “Go to Bed.” “No Hurry.” (Those Urban Tapestry people aren’t half bad either, BTW. *smiles*)

    * “Dandelion Wine” by, uh, Dandelion Wine

    * “I Fought the Law” by Bobby Fuller Four. No idea why this would make me happy — it’s an expression of hopelessness and ennui in the face of The Man. But it’s got a Buddy Holly-type beat, so y’know …

    * pretty much anything from Johnny Cash’s entire career.

    * “What a Day” by Phil Keaggy. Joy- and hope-drenched.

    * “Let’s Take Some Drugs and Drive Around” by the Silos. (Just kidding! Fun song, though.)

    * “Susie Rosen’s Nose” by Austin Lounge Lizards

    * “Blue Rondo a la Turk” by Dave Brubeck

    * “Rose in Spanish Harlem” by Ben E. King

    * “Rocket Ride” and “Lars Needs Women” by filkertom (Pretty much anything by Tom, really.)

    * “White and Nerdy” by Weird Al. (Though the video’s an essential element.)

    * “Volcano” by Jimmy Buffett. Cheeriest song about natural disasters you’d ever hear. Oddly durable considering how dated some of the lyrics are.

    * “Solsbury Hill” by Peter Gabriel.

I could go on at length, so I’d best stop. *smiles*

  5. Dave–I just added Volcano to my playlist last night! 🙂 I haven\’t put any Weird Al on the list yet, but one that always makes me smile is My Baby\’s in Love with Eddie Vedder from Running with Scissors.

ASIDE–Eden has to avoid the T, apparently I have to avoid apostrophes and quotation marks. anyone know what is going on here?

  6. ~ Anything by the Hip, but most specifically – “Cordelia”, “Fight”, “Wheat Kings”, and “Bobcaygen”
~ “Vancouver Divorce” – Gord Downie – I love solo Gord, and this is my favorite.
~ Another Beatles fan here. I am a huge fan of “Rocky Racoon”. I even have a Gideon’s Bible – and only because of that song. My other favorite has to be “Dear Prudence”
~ “All Uncovered” (The day has been so damn hard already so buckle me in on the highway of sin cause that’s just the way I want to be) and “Say Something” – The Watchmen
~ “Turn the Lights On” – Big Sugar
~ “Thorn in My Pride” – The Black Crowes
~ “Thank You” – Glen Phillips. Well, actually almost anything from Glen. But lately I have been stuck on that one.
~ “Rapunzel” – Dave Matthews Band. It always makes me smile.
~ The Soundtrack to Rocky Horror Picture Show always makes me sing loudly.
~ “Graceland” and “Diamonds on the Soles if Her Shoes” – Paul Simon. These songs always put me in a better mood. I don’t know why. And I have been to Graceland. I had to sing that one a few times before we got there.
~ “Cecllia” – Simon & Garfunkel always makes me bounce in my chair.
    ~ Any 54-40 really. Lately – “Crossing a Canyon”
~ “Tangled up in Blue” – Bob Dylan.
~ “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” – Cake. For when I am feeling a bit silly. The only Cake song I actually like.
~ “Underwhelmed” – Sloan. Just a fun song to sing.

And a whole bunch more. 🙂

  7. Ooh! Everyone has such great choices, and you’re all reminding me of things I’ve forgotten about. Cecelia! Solsbury Hill! Yay! Keep ’em coming. 🙂
