Roaring 20s fashion

Just fyi, this post is going to be full of images.

So, in a few weeks, I and the rest of All Things Jennifer’s Ladies in Red will be celebrating her upcoming nuptials at a Roaring 20s themed bridal shower.

This post is going to be mostly about the clothes. Specifically, mine. 😉

I bought this dress on ebay:

Then I bought this hat (can’t seem to grab the image…sorry!) which I thought would be perfect, but I feel like it looks weird on my head. Maybe I’ll post a photo of that for reference later.

And then there’s this one. I love this, but I’m not sure the brown would look right with the dress:

Then I thought I should have a pair of appropriate shoes…I found this shoe, which is something I might actually wear:

The only place I can find it in anywhere near my size is on ebay, and I’m still worried it’s a half-size too big.

Then there are these, from Target:

Cheap and cute…and assuming they fit, something I will definitely wear.

And then, of course, I’ll add some beads and whatnot…I guess I’m looking for opinions on hats and shoes, if you would be so kind as to share them with me.

Happy Friday!

Dress arrived!

If you follow me on facebook, you might have seen me recently wondering about whether or not to buy this vintage dress. I bought it, and it arrived today. It is lovely, fits well (except for maybe some minor alterations in the bodice–it’s a tiny bit loose), and I am SO excited. 😀 It does smell faintly musty, so if anyone has any good advice about how to deal with that, I’d love to hear it!

I am now totally addicted to shopping for vintage (and retro-styled) items. Check out my Pretty Dresses board on Pinterest, if you are so inclined…

I might need to learn to sew…vintage dresses aren’t easy to find in my size (was everyone teeny tiny? or did everyone just use a girdle/corset to squeeze into teeny tiny dresses? Hrm. Anyway, there are lots of vintage patterns for sale on Etsy, but  I have never been good at such things. Maybe time to try again?

Weekend wrap-up (coming soon)

Ack. Where does the time go?

I opened this draft half an hour ago, figuring I’d write my weekend wrap-up post. And I got sucked into other things. And now I’m tired. Here are some photos:

dress-side view

Yeah, I bought the dress. And paid too much to have it altered. 😉 But it was a big hit. Where else do you suppose I could wear it? (aside–I have *evil* redeye in this photo. I’m going to have to fix that…)

comic!

Seanan put a custom comic in the auction, and used this one (among others) as an example. I am now the proud owner of “Spider Powers” (I won it in a raffle!). 🙂

haircut

Got my hair cut. France rocks!

butter it's not!

Made me laugh.

LMB and Rand

Rode in an elevator with author Lois McMaster Bujold.

i can has bat?

Encountered adorable bat on the way to Ohio. Said to self, “I must buy this for Seanan.”

More photos here. More words, well, when I have time. 😉 Fun times were had. Erin is tired…

eBay will be my downfall

Would it be crazy to buy this:

Just because I think it’s purty? (approx. $50 US w/shipping)

And then I found this:

while searching for something to wear to the World’s Largest Disco, and I want to buy it just to wear because it’s SO adorable.

I need to be stopped. 😉

(by the way, if you’re interested in coming to Buffalo for the Disco, let me know!!)

Stuff I want

How much do I need this t-shirt?

UPDATE: shirt has been ordered. woohoo!

My top ten most mystifying fashion trends

10. Skirts/dresses worn over jeans
9. Short skirts with 3/4 length tights or leggings
8. Gaucho pants
7. Sparkly purses
6. UGG boots
5. Pants with words on the butt
4. Collars up
3. The shrug
2. The cropped hoodie (cousin of the shrug)
1. Anyone over the age of 25 trying to pull off any of the above!

Grrr…

Everything is getting on my nerves a little today.

I was getting ready to go out and about today, and needed to fix myself some food. There was a little mishap (slight case of the dropsies) and I got barbecue sauce all over my shirt. Grr.

I found a cute dress in the Chadwick’s catalog that would be perfect for Shannon’s wedding. I ordered cute dress, got it, tried it on, and realized I needed a smaller size. I shipped the dress back, went to order the smaller size, and of COURSE it is backordered.

So I stopped off at the outlet mall today to try and find something…nothin’.

Also, I purchased myself a new domain name…I’m thinking of (at SOME point) moving my blogs over to my own server. No rush…I figured I’d be able to play around and take my time…but I did something wrong in the setup and I can’t quite figure out how to fix it. Frustration abounds.

OH…and I don’t know how I forgot to mention this before, but apparently when you download the new version of Firefox, all of your bookmarks vanish into internet limbo. Blah.

A little bit of…

My weeks get so busy sometimes that I don’t have a chance to write everything I think about writing. And this past week, I’ve been kept *very* busy while subbing. Extra classes and little free time, and so forth. So here are a few random and unconnected things I read about, thought about, saw or heard last week:

1. I’ve not been to the Washington Market downtown, and I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. However, their dreadful radio commercials make me want to tear my hair out. The copy is bad, the readings are bad, everything about them is BAD.

2. I saw this post at livejournal that really, really struck a chord with me. The basic gist of the post is that we as a culture and women in particular have a tendency to constantly measure our worth against the people around us. I know it’s something I’m guilty of…that instead of taking pride in my own accomplishments, feeling good about where I am and what I’ve done and what I can do, I compare myself to people I know. Friends and acquaintances and relatives and strangers alike. Women, I think, have a strong tendency to do this in terms of time. As in, I’m 30, and I don’t have X, Y and Z. All these other people have X, Y and Z, therefore, there must be something wrong with me.

I’ve gotten way better at this than I used to be, by the way. But every once in a while…

3. Does anyone out there have a teenage daughter? If so, please talk to me about how you deal with the teenage girl fashions. Oh, and by the way, I think I’ve figured out the sandals/flip-flops in winter phenomenon. Someone has failed to tell these children that Buffalo is not, in fact, located in southern California. 😉

I guess that’ll do it for now. Have a good one!
