The old apartment

This is where we used to live.

And this is what’s going up in its place.

It’s strange. Surreal, even. I couldn’t quite wrap my brain around it enough to get introspective, but you might want to read Jen’s post. 759 Lafayette was sort of our last hurrah as single girls, where we lived when we both met our respective mates and moved on to start a new chapter in our lives, and it’s hard to think of it being gone.

And powerlust posted a link to the Buffalo ReUse flickr set. I haven’t looked at them yet.

Seven Eight Random Things

I’ve done so many of these things (including the 100 things about me list) that I’m running out of things to say. I did this “Seven things” meme back in the summertime, so I’m reposting it with one new random thing instead of coming up with eight new ones.

Tagged by Ontario Emperor. Rules:

1. Link to your tagger and post these rules.
2. List EIGHT random facts about yourself.
3. Tag EIGHT people at the end of your post and list their names.
4. Let them know they’ve been tagged.

1. I’m really short. All the women in my family are short, but I think I’m the shortest. I just barely crack 5 feet.

2. To date, my longest relationship has lasted 3 years and approximately three months. I’m looking to break that record this October. Three years and six months. Record broken. Woohoo!

3. I slept with a teddy bear well into my adult life.

4. I have weird fingernails. My nail beds are wide, and the nails flatten out when they get long. It looks bizarre, so I keep them short. (I had acrylic nails for a while, in my 20s, but the upkeep got to be both too expensive and too time-consuming for my taste)

5. I’m pretty low-maintenance, appearance-wise. I wear little (if any) makeup, I hate spending more than 5 minutes on my hair, and I’m not into fashion at all.

6. I have a weakness for sandals. I don’t buy expensive shoes, but my sandal collection is larger than it probably needs to be.

7. I hate, hate, hate “stepping in wet.” If my socks get wet (by stepping on a wet bath mat, for example), they must be changed immediately. I do everything in my power to avoid this circumstance.

um…

8.When I was in college, I joined a sorority. Oddly enough, one of the things you seem to do quite a lot of in a sorority is sing. A group of us named ourselves the “tone deaf club.” I am not tone deaf, and I know this…but many of the women in my sorority were really good singers and that intimidated me. I am slowly but surely overcoming my fear.

I have somewhat more interesting answers for the five random things meme.

I’m breaking the rules and not tagging. If anyone does choose to participate, please post a comment linking to your answers!

Day off report

So I was especially happy to have the unexpected day off because Rand has been sick, and I’m feeling a bit under-the-weather myself…not full-blown sickness, but like it’s trying to get me. I broke out the Zicam and bought some Airborne upon the recommendation of a friend. Here’s hoping.

I had originally thought I’d get all kinds of things done today, but my body told me it needed to rest, and so rest I did. Rand and I watched some TV…finished season 2 of My name is Earl and watched some more Buffy. Oh, and I napped a little. And drank a lot of water. Exciting life, huh?

The bad thing is, I had a whole stack of papers I had planned to tackle during my planning periods today. I’m leaving early tomorrow to go to the doctor (not illness related…I’ve had this appointment scheduled for months) AND I need to prepare sub plans for Friday. Meh.

I’ve been away from the computer for most of the day, and I expect that trend to continue…the next couple of weeks are going to be pretty busy for me. Hope everyone’s doing well!

Does sitting by a nice cozy fire, with a cup of hot tea/chocolate, and a book you can read for hours even when your eyes grow red and dry and you look sort of scary sitting there with your insomniac appearance? Then you fit this category perfectly! You love the power of the written word and it’s eloquence; and you may like to read/write poetry or novels. You contribute to the smart people of today’s society, however you can probably be overly-critical of works.

It’s okay. I understand.

Reading, watching, listening (Happy New Year edition!)

Reading: This has been fairly well covered, but I did sneak in one more (short) book in the past few days–Abadazad-The Road to Inconcievable by JM DeMatteis and Mike Ploog. It’s the first in a series, and I found it very enjoyable.

Watching: It’s been a busy week!

In the theater: Juno, Charlie Wilson’s War, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Three very different movies, but I enjoyed them all.

I adored Juno. Precious? Yes, but also smart and funny and very well done. I loved the cast. I first encountered screenwriter Diablo Cody through Eden’s blog, and I was a semi-regular reader of her blog for a while.

I have three words to say about Charlie Wilson’s War–Philip. Seymour. Hoffman. He was fantastic. The story was interesting, and I was entertained by the type of dialog I’ve come to expect from Aaron Sorkin. Rand and I both noted, though, that it wasn’t particularly dramatic…the story had very little drama or tension. Tom Hanks was likable as the title character (duh), and Julia Roberts did a fine job in her role as well.

And Walk Hard was simply hilarious. The songs (many of which were written by Dan Bern) were great. In fact, we downloaded the complete soundtrack from iTunes. The cast was great, too.

What else? Slums of Beverly Hills, season 1 of Buffy (not quite finished), more season 2 of Earl, random episodes of The Office, Styx: Caught in the Act (HEE! awesome.), random bits of various New Year’s Eve countdowns. Probably some other stuff that I’ve forgotten…

Listening: Walk Hard, the soundtrack. Styx (discovering some songs that I didn’t previously know…). Looking forward to listening to some of the CDs that I got for Christmas, including Veronica Mars (whee! thanks, Stephanie!!) and the mix I got from Samantha.

Happy 2008, everyone!

In 2007, I…

Went to my grandpa’s 85th birthday party.

Mused about why I blog.

Saw my cousin rock Into the Woods.

Got in touch with an old friend.

Searched for a good substitute for Peter Pan Peanut Butter.

Mused about babies and fertility.

Celebrated 3 years with Rand and attended my high school reunion.

Celebrated the birthday to end all birthdays!

Lost a friend.

Completed NaBloPoMo.

Had a *fabulous* time at the World’s Largest Disco.

Read a bunch of stuff.

Of course, I did a bunch of other stuff, too. All in all, 2007 was pretty good to me. A toast, then, to more good things to come in 2008!

Belated bday shoutout

To Jen! The big day was actually yesterday, and while I did not neglect the birthday wishes entirely, I never got around to posting on my blog. Happy birthday, Jen!
What’s been going on in my world? Shopping, movies, lounging about, cuddling, general recharging of batteries, etc. More updates soon… 🙂
