Reading, watching, listening (Christmas eve edition)

It’s been a very busy few days, and will continue to be busy. I expect posting will be sparse this week. In the meantime, here’s the reading, watching, listening post I actually started on Friday.

Reading: Starman (ongoing). Just Listen, by Sara Dessen. I love, love, loved this book. I may write an extended review for my book blog, where I have not posted in months.

Watching: How the Grinch Stole Christmas (original TV special, NOT the movie), Elf (with my kids at school, so I essentially watched it four times. I had never seen it before. Really, really funny…), more Season 5 Simpsons, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Rand and I have begun watching the DVDs. I’ve seen most of them. He has not…), Mystery Men.

Listening: Greg Klyma and Ookla the Mok (the show at Madame Mocha’s was tons of fun, really.); Christmas music; Hawksley Workman; Larry Miller: Spoiled Rotten America.

And that’s all I have time for right now…enjoy your day!

Thursday Thoughts

First off, a big happy birthday shout-out to Eden!

Right now, the big thought on my mind is “one more day until break!” I so need this…time to regroup and recharge. This week hasn’t actually been bad. I had an observation earlier in the week, and I think it went really well.

I had a bunch of other things I was going to talk about, but my brain is moving into shutdown mode. I skipped “Wedding Wednesday” this week, because seriously? Who can think about weddings this close to Christmas? (er, I’m sure the answer is “lots of people.” Just not me!)

Don’t forget…this Saturday, you can see Greg Klyma with special guests Ookla the Mok at Madame Mocha’s on Lovejoy! (contact me for more info)

Plus Weekend Wrap-up, Part 2…

low show

That is, sadly enough, the best photo I got at the Lowest of the Low concert last weekend. Rand, John and I got to Club Infinity early (before the doors opened) so that we could secure a spot at one of the “tables” along the walls. Unfortunately for us, the stools had been removed so as to pack more people into the space. Sigh.

I decided to stand behind Rand and John–between the “tables” and the wall–because the floor was about six inches higher there. That didn’t last. As more and more people began to crowd into the club, I felt more uncomfortable where I was standing. “Concert” and “Personal space” are not words that seem to go together.

There were two opening acts. The first was a local band that didn’t impress me all that much. The second was the Marble Index, a three-piece from Hamilton, Ontario, whom I’ve seen open for the Low before. I enjoyed them more last Saturday than I have in the past. They did a great job of setting the crowd up for the main act, and didn’t overstay their welcome.

As the concert began, this became my view:

my view

Sigh. Soon after, I decided to sit up on the wood half-countertop thing that edged the “table” area. I figured there were too many people there for anyone to come and yell at me.

They opened with “A Casual Overdose” from Sordid Fiction, which I thought was an odd choice. A little while later in the set, they played “The Last Recidivist,” which I thought would have been a better opener.

I really don’t have the set list memorized, but I can say they played many favorites from Shakespeare My Butt. In addition to other songs from Hallucigenia and Sordid Fiction, they played several songs from Stephen Stanley’s upcoming solo album, and several from Ron Hawkins’ current solo album (which was NOT being sold at the show. Grr.).

For their second encore, the guys played “Letter from Bilbao” and then finished up with “Rosy and Grey,” both of which brought a little tear to my eye. (People were yelling for “Rosy and Grey” WAY too early on in the evening. I wanted to shout, “People, you don’t really think they’ll leave without playing it, do you? DO YOU?”)

I feel like I’ve sort of come full-circle with my Lowest of the Low experience…I was there for their reunion show at the Tralf (with Jen, Rachel, and another friend with whom we’ve sadly lost touch) in 2000, and there for their farewell show. It was strange being there without Jen…as many times as I’ve seen the Low over the years (I’ve lost count), I think this is the first one I went to without her. (she couldn’t be there because of other commitments…) Jen, I missed you!

And while this will be the last we see of Lowest of the Low (forever? who knows…), I’m sure it won’t be the last we see of Ron Hawkins, Stephen Stanley, Lawrence Nichols, David Alexander, and Dylan Parker. At any rate, I’ll bid a fond farewell to the band that’s been the source of many happy memories for me over the past seven years–the good times with friends, the road trips to Hamilton and Toronto and Fredonia, meeting the band at Spot Coffee, the great music, and at least in a small way, bringing Rand and me together.

Thanks for everything guys.

And I’ll say, “goodbye, I love you.
‘Cause it’s time that I should go
…”

Thursday Thoughts (er, sort of)

Busy days…in lieu of a typical “Thursday Thoughts” post, I wanted to share a few upcoming musical events!

Tomorrow night at the California Brew Haus in Rochester, we have…er…”Nipplepalooza III” (no, I don’t know why it’s called that) featuring:

Ookla the Mok
Worm Quartet
Carla Ulbrich
Rob Balder
and Sudden Death

Show begins at 9:30. $5, 21 and over, $7 under. (more info at the Worm Quartet link)

I have to say, I’m most looking forward to seeing Carla, because it’s been quite a long time.

Saturday night (and every Saturday in December), Greg Klyma and Tom Bianchi will be at Madame Mocha’s, 1190 Lovejoy Street in Buffalo. I’ve never been there, but I’m told it’s a great venue, and Greg and Tom are always fun!

And next Saturday, of course, is Lowest of the Low at Club Infinity. I think those tickets are $28.

See you there?

Weekend wrap-up

It was a pretty low-key weekend, and that’s fine by me. Friday evening, I met Rand for dinner in the city. We ended up going to Mythos on Elmwood. I ordered soup with my meal–they were out of the lemon chicken rice, so I went with the Italian wedding soup. What I got didn’t resemble any Italian wedding soup I’ve ever seen. It had a chicken broth base, and it had meatballs in it. That was about it.

My meal (some sort of chicken and pasta dish that was on the specials menu) was pretty good, but I don’t think it agreed with me.

On Saturday, we met up with John at IHoP, a place I go approximately once a year. This *is* the time of year to do it, though, because Pumpkin Pancakes! I was a little grumpy (it was too crowded and too cold, and our server annoyed me more than once), but the pancakes were good.

Came home and hung the new sheers on the window, which arrived in like two days! Awesome.

Rand and I stopped at a thrift store, and I picked up a couple of paperbacks. One of them was this book, (one of my favorite childhood books) in fantastic condition:

but that’s not all!

I don’t know who Christine is, or why she didn’t want this anymore, but it’s mine now!

Speaking of signed copies, I’m very pleased to have this:

I have awesome friends…

Sunday, we had Ookla-related stuff to attend to–a comics/memorabilia show at the Millennium Hotel. The guys played a few songs and sold a few CDs.

And today is still part of my weekend…I’ve been keeping busy shopping, doing laundry, and reading. And now, I’m about to go have an eye exam…something I’m long overdue for.

Finally, just a note of thanks to all the veterans out there.

I may add to this later, but that’ll do for now. Gotta run!

Wedding Wednesday

The plans are chugging along, so there’s really not much for me to talk about there. The reception is booked, and the deposit has been paid. My dress has been ordered. I ordered these shoes yesterday. (I figure that gives me plenty of time to make sure they’re what I want…plus, I know that I love the shoes, so chances are I’ll wear them regardless.)

Things I haven’t really thought about yet…colors. We’re not doing the full-on “wedding party” thing, instead involving our friends and family in other ways. I love them dearly, but I really don’t see any need to ask them to buy matching dresses. We are going to involve my goddaughter and Rand’s nephews…so Brandy will need a dress, and I need a coordinating color anyway. I’ve considered going with red…or maybe a mauve-y or rose-y color. I dunno…I just want it to look good with the dress. And then there’s flowers. Lots to think about, of course, but I’m not really freaking out. I’m just kind of taking it as it comes.

I got to thinking about this post, written way back in February 2006, prompting many people to ask if there was news they didn’t know about. No, no news. Just the random meanderings of my brain…recalling the past and musing about the future. I ended that post with this:

I couldn’t care less about being a princess for a day. What I do care about is being his wife…his love…his partner…for a lifetime.

I’m glad to know that now, with the ring on my finger and the plans steadily moving forward, that this hasn’t changed. There was a small amount of freaking out while we were trying to find a place and set a date…but once that was done, I calmed down considerably. And now, every now and then, I look at Rand and think to myself, “We’re getting married.” (Sometimes I even say it out loud…I’m such a dork.)

And I smile.

hugs

Photos

When Debbie came to visit at the beginning of September, she took some amazing photos of me and Rand. She also gave us a CD with all the photos she had taken on it. I just got around to uploading some of them to my flickr account. Some of you may have already seen them on hers, but here they are!

This one is probably my favorite photo ever.

A thank you to Ron Hawkins

Just a little more than three years ago, I came across a profile in Yahoo! personals. Before I even read the whole thing, I could see that this profile was different from the others. He could spell, for one. 😉 Upon closer examination, I saw that this man and I had a couple of important things in common…among them, a love of music and a love of books.

What really grabbed my attention, though, was the mention of one of my very favorite musicians: Toronto’s Ron Hawkins, frontman for Lowest of the Low. I’m pretty sure that’s what took me from “hey, this guy looks interesting” to “hey, I’ve got to meet this guy.”

That guy, of course, was Rand. In one of our very first email exchanges, he asked me about the last concert I’d gone to. My last concert happened to be Lowest of the Low, and we began exchanging stories about seeing Ron/the Low in concert. Rand started using Ron’s lyrics as the subjects of our emails, and we’d go back and forth, searching for a lyric that seemed appropriate to the topic of our conversation. After a few dates, he sent a message with the subject “you nearly kissed me blind,” and I nearly swooned. 😉 I go back and read those early messages now and then, and they still make me smile.

When he took me out a couple of days before my birthday, he played his guitar and sang for me. Among other things, he played both Subversives and Black Monday. If there had been any doubt in my mind up to this point, it was gone. 😉

Now, I’m not saying that we wouldn’t have gotten together if it hadn’t been for Ron, but it sure didn’t hurt! Thanks, Ron!

And I’m still every bit as smitten now as I was three years ago. (look for a list of things I love about Rand, ala Debbie Ohi, in the near future!)

Happy, happy, happy!!!

My 33rd birthday. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better…

Well, I didn’t, anyway!

Happy news to follow. This gets a little bit long, so I’m going to cut…

I love my new camera!

I took it out for the first time over the weekend, and I’m very, very happy so far. I haven’t learned everything it can do yet, of course, but I’m having a blast.

Here’s the quick story as to why I got a birthday present when it’s not my birthday…

Many many months ago, my parents talked about getting a new camera. Mom wanted a “real” camera, not just a point-and-shoot. They told me they’d give me their old camera when they got the new one, and I said sure. I wanted to have one of my own, and it had some features that Rand’s camera doesn’t have.

For various reasons, the purchase of said new camera was put off. When I was at home last weekend, my dad gave me the old camera. It was a Gateway, purchased when they bought their computer. It needed a new battery, and it didn’t appear to be compatible with my iBook. I started looking into inexpensive memory card readers as an alternate option.

So the other day, I was talking to Rand about the various options (I had ordered something from Amazon and was sending it back because it wasn’t what I wanted), and he walked away and came back with a box

“Happy birthday,” he said.

I seem to have a knack for sucking the life out of my surprises… 😉

Anyway, the new camera is a Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph. I also got a case, a spare battery, and a larger memory card. It’s fantastic.
