CTV airs both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report at like 1 am. But thanks to TiVo, I can watch them whenever I want.

As I mentioned yesterday, I am pretty musically un-hip. A little background.
As many of you know, I grew up in a small town in Northwestern PA. It’s in the hills and pretty isolated. When I was growing up, I had access to about 3 radio stations: pop (top 40), classic rock, and country. Oh, and I guess there was an oldies AM station, too.
We didn’t get any stations from Pittsburgh or even Erie. If dad was driving the car, we usually listened to oldies. If mom was driving, country. They had a fair collection of albums…Fleetwood Mac, the Moody Blues, Alabama, Kenny Rogers, Neil Diamond…so what I listened to was what my parents listened to.
As you may have guessed from the title of this post, my case in point is Genesis. For all I knew, Genesis was always a three-piece pop act. And Then There Were Three was released in 1978, when I was four years old. I only know the name of this album because of Follow You, Follow Me, which might be my favorite Genesis song. I was semi-aware of Genesis througout my childhood, with hits like Misunderstanding, That’s All and Taking it All Too Hard, but they didn’t really make it completely into my consciousness until Invisible Touch in 1986, when they hit in a really big way. (I was twelve.)
And Peter Gabriel? I don’t think I even knew his name until Lloyd Dobbler held that boombox over his head to win back Diane Court. I was vaguely aware that there was a song called Solsbury Hill, which I liked, but I didn’t know who sang it. I certainly had no idea that there was any connection between him and the pop trio I knew as Genesis.
As a teenager, I was firmly entrenched in the popular music culture. I liked (or hated, as the case may be) what I heard on the radio. MTV didn’t make it to St. Marys Cable until 1988. College radio? No college to be found.
I didn’t listen to The Cure or Depeche Mode until they were way past their prime. I didn’t know bands like REM or the B-52s existed until they had radio hits. I thought Ice, Ice Baby was a cool song. (in my defense, I DID know he ripped off Queen.) I loved Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and Poison. I owned copies of Gerardo’s Mo’Ritmo, Paula Abdul’s Forever Your Girl, and Tiffany’s self-titled debut. I can’t name a single Pixies song.
In the early 90s, I walked away from pop music almost entirely and listened to country. I enjoyed it–there was a lot of great songwriting coming out of Nashville during that time–but recognize that it wasn’t exactly hip.
In the past few years, since moving to Buffalo, I’ve greatly expanded my musical knowledge. With the help of Jen, I’ve come to love lots of cool Canadian music. I’ve discovered great local acts. Rand has brought dozens of hip indie bands and musicians to my attention.
Rand also recently sat me down and showed me some old Genesis concert footage, with PG in his various costumes. Ummm…
Ah well…maybe if I keep hanging around cool musically hip people I can cancel out the fact that I ever owned that Gerardo album. 😉
I saw this posted on Scalzi’s Whatever. It’s a good laugh.
(I don’t know how to post the youtube videos right in my blog like the cool kids do. If someone would like to tell me, I’m all ears!)
Reading: Just finished The Fourth Bear…brief comments over at the places i go
Watching: Went to see Little Miss Sunshine last night. Despite what Entertainment Weekly had to say (they didn’t like it much), I thought it was great. Steve Carell was fantastic in an understated (but still very funny) role. The scenes at the end, at the pageant, were horrifying, as I suspect they were meant to be. My two favorite moments involved Olive and her brother Dwayne: “Go hug mom” and “Okay. Let’s go.”
Watched the first episode of Deadwood, from Netflix. Not sure I’m completely sold yet…anyone want to talk me into it?
Working through season five of The West Wing. I finally got to see The Supremes in its entirety, which was a fantastic episode. It was definitely rocky without Sorkin, but there are a few moments of greatness in this season.
Also watched the pilot for Kidnapped. Great cast, interesting premise, but I’m not sure I want to invest the time.
Listening: Hmm…what am I listening to these days? I’ve gotten a taste of The Raconteurs (read jennimi’s post about them) and I’ve been enjoying that, despite never having been a fan of the White Stripes.
Hope everyone’s having a good weekend!
Thinking of making this a weekly feature of erin-go-blog. 🙂
Reading:Â The Fourth Bear (Not finished yet, as other things have had to take priority.)
Black Hole (haven’t gotten around to posting this one at the places I go yet. not sure how I felt about it.)
Toasted Cheese submissions
Watching: The Office, season 1 (US version)
Only two episodes in, and I’m already a Pam and Jim fan. 🙂
Listening: Sloan. Lots ‘n lots of Sloan.
Thanks to Debbie, for letting me post her photos!
I finally got to see Sloan last night at Thursday at the Square. Yay for Sloan! 🙂 (Debbie’s photos are not from Thursday at the Square. They’re from a show she attended with Rand before I knew either of them. There are more photos there.)
As much as I enjoy Canadian music in general, I really wasn’t familiar with Sloan until I met Rand. He bought me a copy of Pretty Together for my birthday back in 2004 and gave me a mix CD (well, two) of songs that he thought I should know. 🙂
Anyway, aside from the typical annoyances of a free outdoor concert, I had a great time. They played most of their hits, and I heard most of my personal favorites…including Losing California, Everything You’ve Done Wrong, and The Rest of My Life. They also played some new tracks.
The first song they played during their encore, Sensory Deprivation, was too long and jammy for my taste…but I understand Lady Turpentine loves it. The rest of the crowd certainly did.
Overall, everyone seemed to have a great time!
I have to post this photo Debbie took of Chris, because it’s so fantastic:
I had a lot of fun seeing the guys’ personalities on stage. Even though they all write and sing, Chris definitely takes on the front man role…he’s the super-outgoing hyper one.
Oh, and here’s a link to someone on flickr who posted photos from last night.
Last night’s TATS was also the kickoff of Buffalo Old Home Week. I don’t know if I’m going to make it to any of the other events, but I encourage you to check out the schedule and try to make it to something! I did buy a t-shirt, because it’s a cause that I really want to support. Kudos to everyone who helped make Buffalo Old Home Week happen! 🙂
Now, I must chain myself to the chair and write my syllabus…gah.
Thanks to TV Squad for letting me know that Joss Whedon and James Gunn recently posted lists of their favorite TV characters.
Gunn’s rules:
As I tend to enjoy ensemble shows, this is really, really hard. I’m trying to limit myself to one character per show. 🙂
Honorable mentions (people from shows I’ve already mentioned):
Who are your favorite characters? 🙂
Having now seen most of the Woody Allen movies featuring Diane Keaton, I have a confession to make.
I don’t really like Diane Keaton in Woody Allen movies.
It’s not that I don’t think that she’s funny, or that she shouldn’t do comedy…it’s that I find her characters in Woody Allen movies mildly irritating.
And while I’m confessing, like annabel_lee, I was not overly fond of The Graduate.
Oh, and one more…I’m just now watching The Godfather for the first time ever. (I’m about halfway through.)
Reading: Bookends, by Jane Green
Watching: Boondocks, the cartoon
This is good stuff. It’s smart, irreverent, inappropriate, and very, very funny.
Also Wonderfalls. I finally finished! I liked the resolution of the Jaye/Eric storyline, as well as the Aaron/Mahandra storyline. But my favorite thing? Was the monkey bookend’s answer to Jaye’s wailing “Why do you talk to me?”
Answser? “Because you listen.”
Yeah. 🙂
Listening: XTC
Rand made me a mix CD a long, long time ago. I enjoyed it very much then, but I’ve recently rediscovered it. Some of my current favorites:
Dear God, Earn Enough for Us, I’d Like That, I’m the Man Who Murdered Love, Scarecrow People, Stupidly Happy and We’re All Light.
I’m sometimes overwhelmed by the sheer volume of posting (they post like 100 times a day), but by scanning through on bloglines, I can find gems like this:
Otherwise known as the -ly song. At least to me.
Fantastic. 🙂
