Weekend stuff

So over the weekend, Rand and I traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Why Ann Arbor? Well, Rand wanted to get away for his birthday, and Ann Arbor is a cool town, and I’d never been there. It’s not too bad of a drive (about five hours if you drive through Canada), and so it was off to Michigan for us.

Before heading out, we visited with Rand’s brother in Batavia for a bit. We had bagels, and juice, and ping pong, and pleasant conversation, and then we were on our way. Before we left, I snapped this photo of sad little daffodils covered in snow.

The drive wasn’t too bad, and we made decent time except for the last little bit of the trip. It started to snow hard enough to make it difficult to see. By the time we got to the hotel, I was a cranky Erin.

Old photo fun

I just uploaded a bunch of old photos that I scanned today. They’re from high school, so you know they’re going to be good for a laugh.

I asked Scott, my Australian penpal, for his permission to post a couple of photos I had from back in the day, and he gave me his blessing. So here ya go:

You can see a more recent photo on his myspace page.

And just for giggles, here’s one of me about to go snorkeling in Hawaii:

And there’s so much more! See for yourself. 🙂

Children will listen

So, Into the Woods.

I’d never seen or heard Into the Woods before the weekend. I was vaguely aware of the basic story, and I think the melodies of a couple of the songs had worked their way into my consciousness at some point, as they sounded somewhat familiar.

As I mentioned, my cousin Scott (a sophomore!) got one of the leads in the musical this year. He played The Baker (which you might say is the lead, given that he was the last one out for curtain call), and he did an absolutely outstanding job. His voice, his acting, his comic timing…all great. I was very, very impressed.

That blur of fuzzy yellow hair behind us is Rapunzel, who was also fantastic. Really, I don’t have anything bad to say about any of the kids who were in the show. They did a terrific job.

I loved the first act of this show…the way the stories are tied together is pretty clever, the music is good, and it’s generally fun. Act 1 ends on a nice, upbeat note…and then comes Act 2.

Man, is Act 2 dark. Princes are cheating on their wives, bakers wives are cheating on their husbands, characters are dying all over the place, being squashed by the giant and whatnot.  Eep.

But that said, the finale song “Children Will Listen” is lovely, and brought a tear or two to my eye. (and really, it’s not a musical unless I’ve shed some tears…)

Anyway, I say “bravo!” to the cast and crew of Into the Woods, St. Marys Area High School, March 2007. And I make a mental note to see more musicals. 🙂

Holy crap on a cracker…

I logged into my Toasted Cheese email account  today and got quite a surprise.

Er…let me start at the beginning!

When I was taking German in high school, we signed up for penpals in other countries. We got extra credit for taking a German penpal, but were allowed to take others as well, just for fun.

In addition to my German penpal, I wrote to a girl from Italy and a boy from Australia. Of these three, the only one that really stuck was the Australian boy, whose name was Scott. We kept in regular contact throughout high school, and even a bit into college. We lost track of each other, and I always kind of wondered what happened to him.

Well, thanks to the magic of the Internet, I don’t have to wonder anymore! He located me on TC and wrote to find out if I was, in fact, the Erin that he used to write to.

How cool is that?

🙂

FKO photos

I’ve somehow managed to be quite busy today without accomplishing much of anything. I did spend some time uploading my weekend photos to flickr. Here are a few for your enjoyment:

Greetings from TO! and a birthday message!

Spending the weekend in lovely Toronto. (Mississauga, technically, but we were in Toronto earlier today…) I’m writing this post from the lobby of the Delta Hotel, where there is free wireless access. There is not free wireless access from my room. 😛
I thought I’d be able to post a couple of photos I took with my phone today, but alas, I cannot seem to send photos from my phone while across the border. You’ll just have to wait until I get back. 🙂

I’m just about to say goodnight, but before I go, a happy, happy birthday to my mommy. (I did speak to her today, and R and I sent flowers, which she tells me were lovely. Yay!)

She’s the smaller one. 😉 Love you, mom!

A photo of me! Whee! For Thursday–Photo Day at Create a Connection.

Also in the project 365 set at flickr.

By the way, my ability to “blog this” seems to be broken since installing the new theme. Hrm.

Work

I’ll be happy to have the money, but lord how I wish I hadn’t taken work today.

It will be so very nice when this day is over…

Hope you’re having a better Monday than I am!

Project 365-smells like spring

smells like spring

This is self-explanatory enough, but I found myself wanting to write a post around the same photo, so I’m combining them rather than doing two separate posts w/the same photo.

I do love me some Bath & Body Works. I divide the scents into spring/summer and fall/winter. Yesterday, I found myself itching to bring out the spring scents. I went into the cupboard to pull out two of my favorites–Sweet Pea and Sheer Freesia.

The bottle of Sweet Pea shower gel had…turned, I guess is the best word for it. Has this ever happened to anyone else? It had changed color and smelled funky. I threw it and the body splash away. I had bought a bunch of the Sheer Freesia creamy body wash on clearance a while back, but found myself out of lotion. Oh no! Since I was free, I went on an excursion to the mall. I came back fully replenished and ready for spring. I am willing spring to be here through the sheer power of my scent choices! I’ve had a taste, and there’s no going back. Snow on my car this morning? Feh. I refuse to acknowledge you.

My favorite fall/winter scent is Warm Vanilla Sugar. This year, I enjoyed Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin, which is one of those limited edition, bring it back once or twice a year kind of scents. Some of my past favorites include Plumeria, Juniper Breeze, Vanilla Bean, and plain old Freesia. (The last two have been phased out, but I think I prefer the replacements anyway.)

I went with Sweet Pea today. 🙂
